BOOK REPAIR FEEDBACK
Some recent examples of books before and after I have repaired them.
Recollections of My Life and Times by Thomas Jackson:
The first image shows the books in a very sad state with a broken back, loose sections of pages and with most of its spine missing; the second image shows spine portion of the repaired book that has been put on to allow reattchment of the book block to its covers. The new book-cloth spine strip was matched and lightly stained to blend in and tone in the previously faded cloth.
Customer feedback: Hello Jude,
You've done an excellent job. The colour match is much better than I would have thought possible.
The book was written by my wife's great great great grandfather although we only acquired it earlier this year. It is good to know that it is now in a much sturdier condition than it was when we got it.
Thanks for undertaking such a wonderful restoration.
Best Regards, Roger Parker. |

Common Wayside Flowers by Thomas Miller/illustrated by Miles Birkett Foster.
The book block was completely detached from the 'case' or covers. The pages were all separated and many had tears. It was originally bound in the late 19th century in red, decorative, cloth which was badly faded to the spine and the inner edges of the boards. It had been bound by the 'caoutchouch' method of printing the pages separately and glueing them with a rubber solution. This was a speedy method of binding that became popular in the mid-19th century. Sadly many of these books have fallen apart due to the rubber eventually drying out.
I reglued the pages of the book block using saw-cuts diagonally across the tightly held pages; inserted linen thread into the recesses and glued the back. Next I put on a 'cotton duck' lining to the spine, with book-cloth over that to attach the front and back boards. All tears were mended with Japanese repair tissue. The original end-papers were preserved. The covers were stained to match with the original colour.
Customer feedback:
Dear Jude,
The book arrived safely this morning. What a good job you have done. It is obvious to me that the repairs were made with loving care, thank you so much. Regards Gillian |

Family Bible in full leather binding. Before and After Restoration.
This had been a beautifully bound bible in mid-brown goatskin with a tight backed spine. The spine was still well adhered to the back but the front/back boards had come away. The condition of the book-block was good but the title page was torn out and missing.
I gave the new new-end-papers and new end-bands; a new goat-skin spine, and then re-layed the original spine over the new peice. The new leather was stained to match the colour of the original. Finally, I preserved and polished the bible.
Customer Feedback:
Hi Jude,
received the Bible the other day. We are both very pleased with your efforts, thank you for doing such a
wonderful work of repair on it.
Regards,

Hound of The Baskervilles: Conan Doyle. First Edition.
This book was fairly intact except that one edge of the spine was split open. Both boards were still attached and the end-papers inside were good; uncracked and clean. It was important that it reatained its end-papers, and I wanted to do this without having to remove the book from the 'case'. I devised a method of putting on a new spine under the hinges of the book as usual; then I designed a method to attach the new spine into the boards whilst disturbing the end-papers as little as possible. The operation was a success and I was able to reposition the old spine over-laying it onto the new one.
The images show the book as received; the inside of the book showing the end-papers after the repair and undamaged in any way. The final image shows the finished book. |
